The decision to fight against apartheid, according to Benjamin Pogrund, was easy. In spite of the personal risks he took in exposing the brutality of the former South African racist regime while he was deputy editor of the Rand Daily Mail, Pogrund believed that the choice was clear. Apartheid was wrong, and everyone knew that.
The keynote speaker that the South African Jewish Board of Deputies is bringing out from the UK for this year's Yom Hashoah ceremony in Johannesburg truly epitomises the indominatable Jewish spirit. Ben Helfgott emerged from the living hell of a Nazi death camp as a destitute, emaciated, and homeless orphan. Incredibly, he refused to allow these harrowing experiences to break him. Instead, he forged a successful new life for himself in the United Kingdom, and eventually - amongst many other achievements - came to represent his adopted country in the field of weightlifting on the world's highest athletic stage, the Olympics. Ben will relate some of his experiences during and after the Holocaust.

There are insufficient grounds for us to obtain a warrant of arrest against the former Israeli foreign minister. We have concluded that it would be highly irresponsible for us to obtain a warrant of arrest without following the letter of the law".
We regret to inform you that, due to an unresolved labour dispute within the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we have had no choice but to postpone the scheduled visit to South Africa of Tzipi Livni.

It has been widely reported in the media that Judge Richard Goldstone has been barred from attending his grandson’s barmitzvah as a result of pressure from certain sectors of the Jewish leadership. While it has not been involved in this matter, the SA Jewish Board of Deputies was concerned that it would turn into a divisive issue within the Jewish community, and has therefore carefully investigated it to establish the correct facts.
